Dr. Robert Larys, M.D. is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Virginia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He joined Hampton Roads Eye Associates in 2015 as a comprehensive ophthalmologist. He specializes in the management of glaucoma, diabetes, dry eyes, infectious and inflammatory eye disease.
He has always had an interest in the science of vision and he finds that protecting and improving patients’ eyesight is a source of great personal and professional reward.
A former naval aviator and Navy test pilot, Dr. Larys, graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1979. Later, at the age of 38, he received his medical degree from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. After one last flying tour as a Navy flight surgeon, he completed his ophthalmology residency training at Naval Medical Center San Diego. During his residency, he conducted research on LASIK surgery in naval aviators that helped pave the way for advanced laser vision correction for today’s military pilots.
Dr. Larys, has over 30 years of active duty service in the United States Navy. He spent the last six of those at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia where he was twice recognized as one of the top 5 ophthalmologists Navy-wide in patient satisfaction.
In his spare time, Dr. Larys enjoys learning about astronomy, and is an avid cyclist. He is a member of Team Portsmouth and The Chuckatuck Chain Ring road cycling clubs.
